A positive step towards managing medicine costs

Modern veterinary science is constantly advancing, discovering new and more effective ways to treat diseases and illnesses. Thanks to these innovations, pets can live longer, healthier and more comfortable lives. However, the cost of these new medications can sometimes become a concern, especially when they need to be given over long periods of time for chronic, seasonal or persistent conditions.

For many families, these medications become a major part of the overall cost of pet ownership. This is particularly true for long-term conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, allergies and other ongoing disorders, where treatment may be required for much, or even all, of a cat’s life.

In the case of serious diseases such as FIP, anti-viral drugs and the other supportive medications used to promote healing can represent a substantial proportion of the total veterinary bill, as they are only available from specialised suppliers.

Even with pet insurance in place, the cost of these essential treatments can still become a significant financial commitment that needs careful consideration.

        The Cat Pharmacy

We are UK based veterinary pharmacy run for the benefit of cat guardians and their companions.

Our commitment is to provide cat owners with access to prescription veterinary medicines, (POM-V, POM-VPS, Specials / extemporaneous medicines and human medicines), at prices which are not profit driven.
Every price reflects only what the medicine costs us, plus the essential overheads needed to safely deliver it to you.

Pharmacies cannot advertise specific prescription only medicines (POM-V or POM-VPS) or products prescribed under the cascade ("specials" or human medicines), due to UK law.

This is not a problem at The Cat Pharmacy.

All you have to do is get in contact with us (see below), and we will give you a price for the specific medicine or medicines that your cat is being prescribed. If you are happy with our quote then ask your vet for a written prescription (you may have one already).

Your vet may charge you for writing the prescription, however, following a Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) investigation, major UK veterinary reforms are being introduced from March 2026 to curb rising costs.

Key changes include capping prescription fees at £21.00 (+ £12.50 for any additional medicines) and mandatory written estimates for treatments costing over £500 - which should show you a breakdown of the costs of the medicines used for the treatment.

You will also be verbally informed by your vet that they can provide a prescription for the medicines they recommend, and that using on-line pharmacies may save you money.

We can 'fill' a veterinary prescription given to you by the veterinary surgeon treating your cat; all it requires is for you to be happy with the price we quote and for you to send us the original prescription (a copy will not do; again, a UK law requirement).

The prescription has to be validated and confirmed to be appropriate for your cat - which we do with you during a short phone call. We can then process payment (credit or debit card) and send you your medications by first class mail immediately.
